Our early rising allowed us to head to Spain's San Sebastian, which lies just over the border at the base of the Pyranees. Equiped with maps and knowledge on how to go about this journey, we got on a bus near where we are staying directly to the train station, where we caught a train to Hendaye, a port little town on the border with Spain, from there you go to another station just next door and get on a little metro type train to take you to San Sebastian. It was about 20 minutes with the French train and 40 with the other Spanish one. Lots of stops and high rises in Spain.
San Sebastian is a lovely place, the buidings and water ways are very pretty. They have a river and a huge sheltered beach in the bay and one on the ocean front on the other side of the river. Today was perfectly warm and still with blue skies, the water was a beautiful colour. We headed for the port in search for lunch, which we found along the wharf. Very relaxing and great view of the boats and hard working locals. There was a great pile of nets surrounded by women under beach umbrellas repairing them. The shops here are closed longer in the afternoon, not reopening until around 4pm.
We went about exploring then. Enjoyed the different buildings and alley ways, it was all very clean and polished here, they even have a machine at the station which cleans all the windows of the trains. We enjoyed some more shopping, Guy found an exceptionelle suit by Massimo Dutti, that he loved and managed to get the tax back on that purchase as well. The price was ridiculously low.
After that we needed some refreshments before heading back home. We did find a fantastic little place which had the best (like the Fraus) hot chocolates and delicacies for only 5, yes 5 Euros. In love with this place!!! Back to the station and onto a new Spanish train with all announcements and destinations on a big screen in the carriage. Which set Guy off with his Spanish accent. It was all too much! Back in France we managed to get an earlier train to Biarritz and were back there in 1 hour 15 minutes all up since leaving St Sebastian! (As opposed to the morning trip taking over 2 hours!).
Evening strolling and dinner at the Breton creperie nearby and the weather was becoming definItely cooler. The day was perfect. See you again one day St. Sebastian.
